My Best Baby Bargains: Tips for Moms

Today's Tip for New Moms: What to Do When Baby Has Colic (continued)

As we discussed in the previous post, there are lots of reasons why Baby may be having tummy distress. Colic is one of those mysterious maladies that makes Baby so terribly uncomfortable, and yet, sometimes parents are at a loss as to know what to do about it.

Make a Natural Remedy (with Your Doctor's Approval, of Course!)

Check with your pediatrician first! For a long time parents have used natural remedies to treat their babies’ colic. Weak herbal teas like peppermint, anise, dill, fennel and chamomile are some that parents have used. Always be careful with dosages! Consulting a reliable herbalist is recommended if you want to try this method. If you are breastfeeding, drinking the tea yourself can benefit Baby.

You Might Want to Try an Over the Counter Remedy

Gripe water is a solution that many parents find effective in relieving colic. It is a concoction made from herbs and sodium bicarbonate. Over the counter gas drops for babies are also available if gas is the culprit to your baby’s tummy distress. Always choose preparations made especially for babies, and be sure to get your doctor's approval before using either of these.

Give Baby a Massage

By gently massaging your baby’s tummy, you can soothe his body and his soul. Another method is to put him across your knees on his tummy, and massage his back. This can help eliminate gas which is causing pressure and pain.

We will be spending several posts on the subject of colic because it is such a common incidence among young babies. More on this in the next post.
Have a great day!

Blessings,

Ginny

Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
